The Lehigh Valley was at the forefront of technology in the 1950s as the first transistors were made at Western Electric plant in Allentown. Since then, the innovations here have influenced generations of talent. Mike Burns, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of iDEAL Semiconductor and Partner at Murray Hill Group, talks about how those in Silicon Valley play the Kevin Bacon game with the Lehigh Valley during LVEDC's 2023 Fall Signature Event. iDEAL Semiconductor, located at Ben Franklin TechVentures in Bethlehem, has developed SuperQ™ a technology at the atomic scale that dramatically improves energy efficiency. Applicable to all types of semiconductors, it works by opening more room for conduction, which reduces resistance and energy loss.

Doug Dopp, Senior Director of Manufacturing at Broadcom, talks about how Broadcom remains a critical part of the technology economy at the 2023 Fall Signature Event. Broadcom operates a wafer fabrication facility in Upper Macungie Township where 250 employees develop and manufacture indium phosphide semiconductor lasers and detectors for fiber-optic networks and data centers. Those technologies are key to recent developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
